[49390] St Nicholas, Leicester & Jewry Wall deur Budby

St Nicholas, Leicester. The oldest church in the city. Grade l listed. Reputed to be on the site of a Roman temple, and incorporating much Roman masonry and brickwork. The church overlooks the Jewry Wall and the site of the Roman Baths. The Jewry Wall forms a screen across the west end of the church. The Jewry Wall. Grade l listed. One of the largest remaining Roman masonry structures in Britain, and the only element of the Roman town of Ratae Coritanorum to survive. Built in about AD 160, it formed the entrance to the public baths. The wall later became the west wall of the original Saxon church of St Nicholas, which ensured its survival.
