Die Dolmabahçe-paleis (Turks: Dolmabahçe Sarayı) in Istanboel, Turkye, aan die Europese kant van die Bosporus, was van 1856 tot 1922 die hoof- administratiewe sentrum van die Ottomaanse Ryk, buiten ’n tydperk van 20 jaar toe die Yıldız-paleis gebruik is.

Geskiedenis

Kaart wat die Dolmabahçe-paleis vertoon. Nabyskoot van die paleis vanaf die Bosporus. Die Dolmabahçe-paleis is tussen 1843 en 1856 gebou in opdrag van sultan Abdülmecid I. Die paleis van 45 000 m2 staan op ’n terrein van 110 000 m2. Hacı Said Ağa was verantwoordelik vir die bouwerk, terwyl dit ontwerp is deur die argitek Garabet Balyan, sy seun Nigoğayos Balyan en Evanis Kalfa.

Die ontwerp is ’n mengsel van die barok-, rococo- en neoklassieke styl en tradisionele Ottomaanse argitektuur. Dit bevat elemente van die Ottomaanse paleislewe asook van tradisionele Turkse wonings. Dit is die grootste paleis in Turkye. Die sultan en sy familie het voorheen in die Topkapı-paleis gewoon, maar omdat moderne luukses en styl in die Topkapı ontbreek het, het sultan Abdülmecid besluit om die Dolmabahçe-paleis te bou naby die eertydse Beşiktaş-paleis aan die Bosporus, wat gesloop is. Terwyl die Topkapı uitstekende voorbeelde van Iznik-teëls en Ottomaanse houtsnywerk bevat, is daar in die Dolmabahçe-paleis meer goud en kristal.

Die paleis was van 1856 af die tuiste van ses sultans. In 1924 is die eienaarskap oorgedra aan die nasionale nalatenskap van die Republiek van Turkye. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, die stigter een eerste president van die republiek, het die paleis in die somer gebruik as presidentswoning. Hy het op 10 November 1938 hier gesterf.

Die terrein van die paleis was oorspronklik ’n baai aan die Bosporus wat geleidelik gedurende die 18de eeu drooggelê en opgevul is vir ’n keiserlike tuin. Dit is waar die naam Dolmabahçe ("Opgevulde Tuin") vandaan kom: van dolma ("opgevulde") en bahçe ("tuin").

By the mid-19th century the Ottoman sultans were obsessed with all things Western and determined to move out of Topkapi Palace and into the Dolmabahce Palace on the southern shore of the Bosphorus.
